Is Your Assessment Too High?

Indicators You May be Paying Too Much Property Taxes

  • Your assessed home value is higher than the sales price of comparable homes in your neighborhood.
  • There are many homes like your home in your neighborhood for sale.
  •  There have been foreclosed homes in your neighborhood.
  • Your home was assessed in 2006 or 2007 – during a boom real estate market.

Other Ways You May Save Money on Your Property Taxes

Do you know about the Homeowners Property Tax Credit?

If you live in a household with a combined income of less than $60,000 consider applying for the property tax credit. The filing deadline is September 1, 2008. To learn more about this credit, visit http http://www.dat.state.md.us/sdatweb/htc.html or call the State Department of Assessments and Taxation at 888-246-5941. You can also request an application and more information from the office of Senator E.J. Pipkin, 410-841-3639 or ej.pipkin@senate.state.md.us.

Do you need to learn more about your home’s assessed value?

The Maryland Department of Assessments and Taxation features an online database at http://www.dat.state.md.us/. Simply click “Real Property Data Search” to look up your property and get a better idea of what your home’s assessed value versus comparable homes in your county. You can also call the State Assessments office at 888-246-5941 to request information about your assessment.

Have you sent in your Homestead Tax Credit application?

The Homestead Credit is designed to provide a credit for homeowners that experience rapidly rising assessments. Homeowners must submit a one-time application in order to apply for the homestead tax credit. You can file the application electronically by going to www.dat.state.md.us.  Each property owner’s application form has a unique 8-digit security “Access Number” for submitting the application on the internet.  You can also contact the Homestead Tax Credit Division at 866-650-8783.

I'm proud of what I've accomplished but clearly fights like this one over taxes proves there is much more to do."
